ABOUT THE SHOW
I am Sophie is an exploration of identity in which YOU become the confidante to Sophie Carter, formerly known as Kate Carter. Sophie is a changed woman returning to the United States after living in Paris. She comes home to take care of her father and when she arrives, her loved ones meet Sophie for the first time. What follows is an existential adventure. With humor and an aching heart, Sophie has us all wondering, "Who am I?" and "Who do I want to be?"
"A bold and fearless ode to what makes our hearts sing and saves us from the darkness. It is a strange and beguiling story, as only the best stories are, about a woman who becomes another woman not to survive but to thrive.”
—Samantha Simmonds-Ronceros, Noho Arts District
MEET THE ARTIST
It was by ruminating on the sorta kinda big questions of -
"Who am I?"
"Am I a fraud?"
"Who do I want to be?"
"How do we live our best life?"
and "How do we best use the time we have on Earth?" that I am Sophie was born.
Playwright / Actress Corinne Shor began with character improvisations in her weekly artist workshop. And little by little, petit à petit, Sophie and her whole world grew and took shape. In many ways, Sophie wrote this play. Corinne just took a back seat and went for the ride. With the support and astute feedback from fellow artists in the workshop, Sophie's story became a one person play.
It debuted at The Hollywood Fringe Festival in 2017. At the Fringe, I am Sophie was performed to sold out houses and it was clear something was resonating with audiences. After continued development, a massively successful Seed & Spark campaign and the gathering of her stellar production team, I am Sophie was then shared with an even wider, more diverse audience at The Pico Playhouse in 2018. This run garnered an invitation to bring I am Sophie to the esteemed Pacific Resident Theatre in Venice, CA for a three month run, as part of their 2018-2019 Season. Now, Corinne is thrilled to be a part of Solofest 2020 at The Whitefire Theatre, the largest festival of solo theatre on the West Coast.
Corinne Shor has appeared on stages globally with a diversity of roles that include works of Shakespeare to Sketch Comedy. Favorite credits include: May Bee Burley in Verdigris by Jim Beaver at Theate West and her recurring role as the mysterious Matron on The Event (NBC) playing opposite Hal Holbrook and Jason Ritter. Corinne is also a narrator for young adult audiobooks (Scars of Youth, In my Dreams, The Fairy King).
Her training includes L'ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris, The Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin, Improvisation at Upright Citizen Brigade, and ongoing study with Carole D'Andrea's Acting Workshop and The Storytellers Conservatory in Los Angeles.
